TOKYO JAPAN, January 19, 2015, - JSR Corporation (President: Mitsunobu Koshiba) today announced the launch of “FABRIAL™” filament series for 3D printing, which is developed through its proprietary polymer technology. The first in the series to be launched is the FABRIAL™ P series comprising strength-enhanced polylactic acid (PLA) materials for which there is currently high market demand. JSR will enhance its product line up with various characteristics, such soft, hard, stiff, and tough, to meet application challenges.

The filament is resin material used in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing system. Various methods are used to conduct three-dimensional manufacturing, including fused filament fabrication, stereo lithography, powder bonding, powder sintering, ink-jet and cutting. Among these systems, FFF-based 3D printers are being promoted extensively, ranging from industrial to personal use. Filament materials used in this system are the focus of attention as a critical factor in the potential of 3D printing.Filament materials of the FABRIAL™ P series are designed to be higher in tenacity than conventional PLA and ABS materials. Although PLA and ABS materials are currently popular in the fused filament fabrication market, their applications are limited due to strength and other property restrictions of filament materials. Problems associated with these filament materials include low strength, filament breaks during the processing stage inhibiting prolonged stable molding, and brittle finished products. The P series is a solution to these problems and enables the manufacturer to produce a molded item that will meet practical strength requirements.JSR will showcase FABRIAL™ series at the tradeshow called 3D Printing 2015, to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from January 28, 2015 in Japan.

The poor strength of 3D printed products has so far limited the use of 3D printers to the production of prototypes with the aim of simply checking shape, fitting and other design features. If it becomes possible to build an item that is strong enough for practical use, the way would be open for the use of 3D printers to deliver commercial products. Moreover, 3D printers facilitate the production of intricately designed plastic products that have been impossible to achieve with conventional injection molding methods. This permits efficient production of customized items that meet specialized market needs, possibly boosting the potential of 3D printing.By successively offering prominent materials of the FABRIAL™ series as a solution to emerging social challenges, JSR intends to fulfill the plastic molding needs that conventional filaments cannot meet.

JSR will remain committed to offering additional value to users in line with its corporate mission: “Materials Innovation - We create value through materials to enrich society, people and the environment.”
