Manufacturing Technology and Quality Assurance

From a single drop of insight in the lab to a product that drives industries around the world.

JSR’s products and materials support the world’s leading industries, including semiconductors and displays. Our three foundational divisions —“Production, Quality and Process Technology”—bridge innovative materials born from R&D to commercial production, guarantee the quality our customers require, and establish stable production processes.
These efforts are led by employees who approach their work with steady dedication. Their integrity and teamwork are what deliver JSR’s core strengths: reliable quality and stable supply.

Production Department

The Production Department plays a vital role in scaling products developed in R&D into mass production. The high-performance, high-value-added chemical products we handle must be produced in precisely controlled environments, as even the smallest impurity can compromise their performance. To maintain stable chemical composition and structure, strict production conditions are essential.

Scaling materials from a small laboratory flask to large commercial tanks requires meticulous, advanced technologies and the skilled professionals who make them possible. Driven by our pride in supporting the world’s leading industries, a respect for people, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring stable supply for our customers, we approach manufacturing each day with an uncompromising focus on quality and reliability.

For example, in the Electronic Materials Business

Photoresist, the specialized liquid used to pattern circuits on semiconductors, is so delicate that even microscopic impurities can cause critical defects. For this reason, all manufacturing is conducted in cleanrooms with the utmost care. Although many processes—from raw material charging to mixing, filtration, and filling—are automated, accurately producing and differentiating dozens of product grades still depends on human expertise. That’s why we place great importance not only on our equipment, but on every member of our team, continually strengthening our shared knowledge and teamwork.

Quality Inspection Department

The Quality Inspection Department is responsible for evaluating the quality and performance of manufactured products. As customer performance requirements have increased, so has the breadth and sophistication of our testing. We not only perform established tests based on inspection methods initiated during the R&D phase but also conduct essential technical studies to improve analytical methods for superior reproducibility and enhanced precision. Our Certificate of Analysis (CoA) serves as proof that all test results meet customer specifications, and the Quality Inspection Department is dedicated to enhancing data integrity to further strengthen the credibility of every CoA we issue.

For example, in the Electronic Materials Business

Testing for electronic materials broadly falls into two categories: implementation evaluation, which confirms the performance of photoresist applied to wafers, and instrumental analysis, which examines the physical properties of the chemicals themselves. Both are highly specialized fields that demand extreme precision, such as controlling nanoscale pattern dimensions, measuring defects, and analyzing metal impurity levels at the parts-per-billion (ppb) level.

As the final gatekeepers ensuring the quality of every JSR product, the quality assurance team approaches daily testing with the highest sense of responsibility and dedication.

Technical Department

The Technical Department is responsible for all aspects of manufacturing technology, from launching newly developed products into mass production, to improving existing processes. In addition, the team handles raw material management, manufacturability and scale-up assessments for products in development, statistical process control, customer claim and complaint handling, and rigorous reviews of the stability of manufacturing conditions.
Our team members come from diverse backgrounds: new graduates, colleagues with experience in other functions such as R&D, and mid-career professionals from a wide range of industries. Our work extends beyond the company as well, including direct engagement with raw material suppliers and customers, which is essential to our operations. Since many of our customers are located overseas, technical engineers who are deeply familiar with JSR’s production processes travel to sites around the world to engage directly and build trust. The department’s strength lies in harnessing this diverse group of talent and its commitment to building strong, trust-based relationships.

For example, in the Display Solution Business

In this business, we are advancing a four-pronged localization* strategy in China, the primary region for display panel manufacturing, to enhance customer responsiveness and accelerate decision-making. Within this framework, the Yokkaichi-based Technical Department acts as the command center for global quality assurance and control, providing leadership to our primary manufacturing bases in Kyushu, Japan, Korea, and Changshu, China. By prioritizing communication with customers and local subsidiaries, the department delivers innovative solutions to the display and optical components industry.

  • *Four-Pronged Localization: By localizing four functions in China—① Business HQ, ② Sales, ③ Manufacturing, and ④ Technical Services—we aim to accelerate customer responsiveness and decision-making.

Fine Chemical Process Department

The Fine Chemical Process Department replicates lab-scale formulations and manufacturing conditions using commercial-scale equipment to establish operating guidelines and facility specifications suitable for mass production through pilot runs. Through repeated trial runs and verifications, we gain a deep understanding of processes such as chemical reactions, purification, and separation. We then collaborate closely with on-site manufacturing teams to implement improvements that ensure safety and reproducibility.
Our scope extends beyond analyzing experimental data and designing conditions,it encompasses the entire operational spectrum, including hands-on equipment operation, troubleshooting root causes of abnormalities, and formulating countermeasures. By collaborating closely with the Manufacturing, Production Technology, and Engineering departments, we proactively identify risks associated with mass production and implement measures to build safer and more efficient manufacturing processes. Recently, we incorporated design and process analysis using digital tools and simulations, focusing on developing sustainable processes with a low environmental footprint.

Engineering Department

The Engineering Department serves as the technical backbone responsible for the "foundation of manufacturing," supporting safe and stable production at our factories. In collaboration with the Manufacturing and Technical Departments, we provide technical support for factory operations throughout the entire facility lifecycle, including planning, design, construction management, commissioning, maintenance, and facility upgrades.
Our scope extends beyond process facilities to include clean rooms, utilities, instrumentation and control systems, and information networks. We ensure the environment necessary for quality, safety, and stable supply by managing regulatory filings, estimating construction costs, conducting periodic inspections, and maintaining systems. In our daily operations, we continuously improve equipment reliability and efficiency by addressing unforeseen issues, preventing recurrence, and implementing improvements proposals.
Recently, we have advanced high-precision planning and design by incorporating digitalization. simulations, and data utilization. We are also proactively introducing technologies that facilitate automation, labor savings, and operational efficiency, thereby contributing to increased productivity in the Manufacturing Division.
Through these activities, the Engineering Department serves as a core technical support hub for production bases globally, upholding "safety, stability, and efficiency" as our core values.
