About our Optical Solution Business

JSR’s Optical Solution Business

ARTON™ heat-resistant transparent resin and ARTON™ optical filters for cameras, the flagship products of JSR’s Optical Solution Business, are distinctive product lines that JSR has independently developed and brought to mass production. Their superior optical properties and high quality underpin their competitiveness. Building on core strengths in polymer and processing technologies, and leveraging synergies across its businesses, JSR provides solutions tailored to market and customer needs. Through these capabilities, the company is focused on supporting a wide range of mobile products that require advanced optical performance, including displays and smartphones.

Optical Solutions in Everyday Life

The Optical Solution Business provides a diverse range of materials used in products we encounter every day, including displays and smartphones.

Application 1: Enhancing photo image quality in smartphones (cameras)

JSR’s optical camera filters are incorporated into camera modules used in smartphones and other devices. These filters enable the reproduction of natural colors in photographs, closely matching what the human eye sees.

Application 2: Potential contributions to autonomous driving (sensing cameras)

Cameras are used not only for photography, but also as sensors that provide data for machine-based recognition and decision-making. JSR’s optical filters for cameras offer excellent noise reduction performance and are expected to contribute to the advancement of autonomous driving, where data accuracy is directly linked to safety.

Creating value for society

This business provides materials that enhance the performance of consumer products, contributing to a better quality of life.

Larger, more highly transparent TV displays (ARTON™)

JSR’s ARTON™ resin is a high-performance material that combines transparency, moisture resistance, and high resistance. It delivers outstanding performance in retardation film applications and supports the growing market for large-size displays. Its high transparency enhances display brightness and visibility, providing vivid, clear images while helping reduce power consumption. In addition, its low moisture absorption minimizes film expansion and contraction due to humidity, enabling stable, high image quality in large-size displays. By driving advances in high-performance large-size displays, JSR contributes to a more comfortable and information-rich society.

Contributing to higher camera image quality with Near-InfraRed (NIR) cut filters

Camera performance, one of the most important features of mobile devices such as smartphones, continues to improve year by year. As image sensors become more sensitive, higher in resolution, and larger in size, demand is growing for optical filters to block near-infrared (NIR) light, a source of image noise. In addition to excellent optical properties, JSR’s ARTON™ optical filters offer the thinness, light weight, and resistance to breakage unique to resin materials, thereby contributing to higher image quality in cameras.

Expanding into growing optical sensing applications

Optical sensing technologies used for biometric and environmental recognition in digital devices are expected to expand rapidly into a wide range of applications, driven by remarkable advances in AI. These applications include autonomous driving in the automotive sector and automation in industrial fields. By further refining and broadening the diverse technologies it has cultivated, JSR will continue to provide optical filters optimized for a variety of sensing applications.

Advancing PFAS-free materials

In the development of new materials for ARTON™ optical filters, JSR is advancing PFAS-free alternatives that eliminate the use of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which have raised concerns due to their potential effects on human health. Specifically, JSR is developing PFAS-free substitutes for PFAS-containing dyes currently used in certain near-infrared (NIR) cut filters.

Global business structure

The Optical Solution Business primarily conducts manufacturing and processing in Japan and supplies products to customers around the world, particularly in East Asia. Our overseas sites provide local customers with technical and sales support.
