JSR Group Formulates Paper Procurement Guidelines

CSR 11/01/2013
The JSR Group has recently developed its guidelines for paper procurement. The guidelines are based on the basic concept “When making purchases, JSR will give sufficient consideration to legal and regulatory compliance, resource protection, environmental conservation, safety, human rights, biodiversity, and other factors that lead to a sustainable society”, as specified in the Purchase Policy, which is in line with the JSR Group’s Biodiversity Policies formulated in fiscal 2013.

Although all JSR Group companies have been engaged in eco-friendly paper procurement even before formulation of the guidelines, the new guidelines will facilitate an integrated group-wide effort to favor procurement of paper made mainly from recycled fibers or paper certified to standards of FSC or other forest certification programs.

JSR Group’s Paper Procurement Guidelines

1. Objective
1)Based on the JSR Group’s Biodiversity Policies, these guidelines set forth matters to be considered in procuring paper, with the goal of preventing the group’s business activities from reducing or degrading forest resources in and outside Japan.
2)These guidelines complement the basic concept “When making purchases, JSR will give sufficient consideration to legal and regulatory compliance, resource protection, environmental conservation, safety, human rights, biodiversity, and other factors that lead to a sustainable society”, as specified in the Purchase Policy, section 3 (5).

2. Scope of target
These guidelines apply to paper procured or used by the JSR Group in its business activities (hereinafter, “paper”).
 E.g.
  • Office paper (copy paper, envelopes, etc.)
  • Prints, brochures, etc.
  • Paper used for packaging

3. Guidelines for selecting paper
Paper to be procured should be selected considering the following.
1)Types of paper listed below should be preferentially used:
•Paper made mainly from recycled paper
•Paper certified to standards of forest certification programs*

2)When procurement of the paper listed in item 3.1) is impossible or when the product’s raw materials include fresh pulp, the following should be confirmed:
•That wood as raw material has been cut in compliance with laws and regulations and produced through appropriate procedures, and
•That the paper product has not been made by a manufacturer deemed as causing or having caused serious environmental destruction.

* “Paper certified to standards of forest certification programs” refers to paper that has been certified by a third party as being made using wood from forests that have been properly managed to conserve the forest environment. Typical certification programs include that by the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®).

4. Approach
To promote procurement of paper that complies with these guidelines, an investigation on paper procurement should be conducted prior to information exchange between internal and external parties concerned. Goals should be set separately to promote appropriate procurement activities.
