TOKYO - December 6, 2011 - JSR Corporation (President: Mitsunobu Koshiba) announces that JM Energy Corporation (President: Goro Miyabe) a wholly owned subsidiary of JSR that develops, manufactures and markets lithium ion capacitors (LICs) completed construction of its new manufacturing plant, auxiliary Evaluation Building and Safety Assessment Laboratory in late October, and commenced pilot production of LICs in late November. The plant was created for JM Energy’s flat prismatic-type lithium-ion capacitor cell business, which was chosen as a Fiscal Year 2010 Low-Carbon Emission Job-Creating Business Advancing Industrial Sites by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
JM Energy will begin full-scale production at a production capacity of 120,000 cells per year of flat prismatic type LICs, which were debuted on February 25th of this year, In addition, JSR will utilize the evaluation building to prove effective energy usage in a radiant panel heating and cooling system using JSR’s CALGRIP™ latent heat storage material.

The flat prismatic type LIC, developed with proprietary JM Energy technology, has a larger surface area and higher heat radiation efficiency resulting in the special feature of reduced deterioration due to heat released in charging and discharging in comparison to the common cylindrical type battery. Moreover, the LICs can be placed in serial-parallel without any spaces, contributing to the miniaturization of the overall system. This spring, the company began sample shipment of these LICs and continues to explore possible applications by customers, especially focusing on transportation.

JM Energy will continue to develop LICs towards a wide variety of applications, including energy regeneration, peak charge assist, storage and back-up power supply which require a wide range of voltages and are used in the industrial, construction, and shipping machinery (busses, trucks, municipal electric railways, aircraft, etc) fields.
