PRODUCTS 05/20/2009
Japan Butyl Co., Ltd., jointly incorporated by JSR Corporation ("JSR," President: Mitsunobu Koshiba) and Exxon Mobil Yugen Kaisha (President: D.G Wascom) with a fifty-fifty stake holding, has decided to increase production capacity of butyl rubber at its Kawasaki Plant by 18,000 tons/year. With the completion of expansion work expected at the end of 2010, the company's production capacity of butyl rubber will be 98,000 tons/year.

Butyl rubber is a high-performance synthetic rubber that excels in its impermeability against gases and its heat resistant property. Butyl rubber is used in inner tubes for tires for large-size trucks and buses, and has usages with industrial goods. Halogenated butyl rubber is mainly used for radial tires for passenger cars and its demand is expanding in recent years.

In tandem with the expansion in production of tires for refitting and for new cars, due to the rise in the number of cars sold and owned centering in the Asia region, the expansion of butyl rubber market is expected to continue.

The increase in production capacity this time is to cope with expected rise in the demand for butyl rubber and halogenated butyl rubber centering in the Asia region as mentioned above. Production capacity of halogenated butyl rubber at Japan Butyl Co., Ltd.'s Kashima Plant has been increased by 17,000 tons on yearly basis in 2006 and presently stands at 70,000 tons/year.
