JSR Group's Biodiversity Policies

The JSR Group has formed biodiversity policies based on issues identified through conservation activities conducted in the past. We are currently promoting various activities in accordance with these policies.

JSR Group's Biodiversity Policies

To contribute to the establishment of a sustainable society, the JSR Group strives to identify how our business activities depend on and impact biodiversity, and to promote efforts with consideration to biodiversity.

  1. We prioritize biodiversity conservation in procuring naturally derived raw and processed materials.
  2. We work to make the green spaces of our business establishments biodiversity-friendly.
  3. We strive to develop biodiversity-friendly products.
  4. We emphasize engagement of our staff and cooperation with local communities.

Policy 1. We prioritize biodiversity conservation in procuring naturally derived raw and processed materials.

  • (1) The JSR Group conducted a survey to ascertain whether naturally-derived raw materials are included in the raw materials that the JSR Group purchases and found that they are not in the main raw materials but in some auxiliary raw materials.
We confirmed that there is no major problem with our current procurement process, but will continue to monitor the procurement situation with regard to biodiversity conservation.
  • CSPU logo(2) Toward sustainable paper use the JSR Group has participated in the Consortium for Sustainable Paper Use* since the establishment of that organization, working toward increased use of sustainable paper in society as a whole. In addition, we promote activities throughout the Group that prioritize the procurement of "business-use paper made primarily from used paper or paper with FSC or other forest sustainability certifications" in accordance with the JSR Group Paper Procurement Guidelines, established in 2013 based on the perspective of forest sustainability.

Policy 2. We work to make the green spaces of our business establishments biodiversity-friendly.

(1) We improved the green spaces at our 3 domestic plants and the Tsukuba Research Laboratories based on the Green Space Improvement Plan we created using the cooperation of experts as well as the results of a green space survey conducted in accordance with the Land Use Score Card of the JBIB Guidelines for Sustainable Business Sites. Since FY2016, we have been promoting the improvement of such spaces so that they can be used as communication venues.

FY2015 Progress of Initiatives

Yokkaichi Plant
  • The areas containing company housing have been constructed with green spaces that take biodiversity into account.
These areas are based on the concept of an "Ecology Observation Garden" which utilizes the advantage of being located near a woodland area, allowing people to experience the live nature of the woodland area.
  • Forests containing vegetation from the local area have been created at two locations on the plant grounds. Placards with the names of the various trees have been set up along walkways as one way to foster communication.

Chiba Plant
  • In the "Ikoi no Hiroba" green space on the plant grounds, fruit trees (Japanese bush cranberry or Viburnum dilatatum) that attract birds and trees (sawtooth oak, konara oak, and Japanese hackberry) that attract insects have been newly planted. Birdhouses and beetle houses have been set up and a variety of other details, such as using wood chips to line walkways, designed to allow a wide variety of living creatures to live in the area have been included in the space.

Kashima Plant
  • A pond that recreates the local ecosystem has been built in the green space in the plant site. We plan to plant waterside plants such as lotus and bullrush starting FY2016.

Located in an area richly endowed with nature, JSR Micro Taiwan has since its foundation worked not only on the development and manufacturing of products that have low environmental impact but also on greening of the premises, with the goal of achieving harmony with the global environment.
Since FY2015, we have done away with the contest previously held by regulatory agencies and are now promoting tours of all the companies located in the chemical industry park and tree planting in the entire area.

Policy 3. We strive to develop biodiversity-friendly products.

Since FY2015, in order to achieve the goals of our commitment to "promote the development of biodiversity-friendly products" mentioned in our Biodiversity Conservation Policy, the JSR Group has, with the cooperation of specialists, established a policy to "create environmentally-friendly product standards and assessment system and use this to assess our major products." The details were created not only from a biodiversity conservation standpoint but also with a keen awareness that we need to contribute to a sustainable global environment through our business activities.
The JSR Group maintains its commitment to contributing to a sustainable global environment through the development and provision of environmentally-friendly products.

Policy 4. We emphasize engagement of our employees and cooperation with local communities.

In conjunction with Policy 2, we are using the green spaces created with biodiversity taken into account as venues for communication among employees as well as with the local communities.
