Labor Accidents (Work Stoppage Accidents)

Since its foundation, JSR has conducted safety activities based on the principle that safety takes priority over production. During the annual safety audits, the president visits each work site to engage in dialogues on safety with employees. Worksites completed the development of safety management systems based on the ideas of ISO in FY1997 (April 1, 1996 to March 31, 1997). Since then, health-related issues have been added, and the system is operated as a safety and health management system and various activities are conducted.
Prior safety assessment activities and hazard prediction activities are conducted with respect to facilities and regular and non-regular work to identify hazards and implement physical (facility) and nonphysical (standards and education) countermeasures. JSR also conducts training and education that incorporates various innovations in terms of increasing people's awareness of the issues and passing on technological expertise in preparation for future generations. In FY2009, there were no work accidents resulting in absence from work.
Employees from various cooperative companies work at our plants and safety and hygiene work activities are always jointly promoted with these cooperative companies. To ensure thorough safety in each operation, each plant has a Comprehensive Disaster Prevention Council (Disaster Prevention Council). In addition to considering the causes and measures to be taken to prevent accidents or disasters that occur at cooperative companies, the Disaster Prevention Council also conducts various activities to improve safety and health levels, including instruction, supervision and education on daily safety and health as well as joint inspections of workplaces when construction is underway.
In addition, JSR has established a safety commendation system (the Kawasaki Commemorative Safety Award) that covers group companies to raise worker awareness of safety.

Acquisition of Certification by Plants and Operators

In order to conduct its Responsible Care activities, JSR aggressively strives for JSR plants and operators to acquire "Certificate of the Security and Safety Legislation" certification. This enables plants and operators to create higher quality safety and health management systems in addition to clarifying the responsibility and authority. As a result, certification plays an important role in improving safety technology. At JSR, all plants have acquired plant and operator certification for the High Pressure Gas Safety Law, the Fire Service Law, and Occupational Safety and Health Law. In the future, JSR will continue to acquire certification in hope to improve its environmental and safety standards.

Risk Communication Initiatives2

As part of Responsible Care activities, JSR has been issuing a Responsible Care Report since 1998, taking the lead in efforts to release information on values relating to environmental impact, environmental complaints, number of accidents on facilities, discharge volumes and transfer volumes of harmful chemical substances, etc. For the 2006 edition, the name was changed to the CSR Report in line with the expansion of initiatives tackling CSR. Starting in 2000 all three plants were issuing Responsible Care reports published by the operational centers. The report of the main office and all operational center reports can be viewed on our website.
JSR strives to improve communication with everyone in the local community by conducting a variety of initiatives, including tours of factory facilities by representatives of local governments and participation in environmental dialogue gatherings sponsored by the government.

2  Risk communication here refers to achieving a mutual understanding of risks inherent with certain chemical substances by sharing information among stakeholders and discussing related responses
